| National Trust -NI-Rat Control on Sheep Island |
The National Trust is progressing a project that aims to control the rat population on Sheep Island over two seasons (2026/27 and 2027/28) to improve breeding success and protect the nationally important cormorant colony. Funded by DAERA’s Environment Fund Strategic Strand the programme responds to a decline in the Northern European subspecies of cormorant, likely caused by rat predation. As eradication is not feasible due to the risk of re-colonisation, the focus will be on sustained population suppression, alongside seabird monitoring to measure ecological impact.
A tender opportunity for rat control services will therefore form a key part of the project, seeking contractors capable of delivering effective, multi-season suppression of brown rats on the island in line with best-practice conservation methods. The successful approach will minimise egg predation and support recovery of the breeding colony, contributing to the long-term conservation of this ASSI and SPA-designated site.
